FRSC investigating illegal car racing in FCT – Official
The Federal Road Safety Corps has announced that it has initiated an investigation into allegations of illegal car racing and stunt driving purportedly conducted by certain youths in the vicinity of the National Mosque in Abuja.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, made this revelation during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.
Ogungbemide stated that the corps had received reports from the public regarding this issue, which he characterized as both illegal and hazardous.
"Indeed, I cannot refute the fact that we have been made aware of such activities, which are illegal or at least quasi-illegal," he remarked.
He elaborated that the FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, had instructed the FRSC Sector Commander in the Federal Capital Territory, Felix Theman, to investigate the claims and provide a timely report for appropriate action.
He noted that the complaints have been received from several residents, although the descriptions of the incidents were not clear or consistent.
The national spokesperson for the FRSC pointed out that the reports were primarily based on information provided by concerned residents who observed unusual racing activities in the area.
He emphasized that such actions, if verified, are unlawful, as Nigeria does not allow Formula One-style racing or similar sporting events on public roads.
“Legally, we do not have Formula One running as a regular sport on Nigerian roads, so if such is happening, then it will be compromising the safety of other road users, because it is not legal.
“The corps has not granted permission to any organisation or group to conduct car racing or stunt driving on roads within the territory.”
Ogungbemide confirmed that once the investigation is completed, suitable measures will be implemented in accordance with current traffic laws and safety regulations to protect other road users.
He emphasized the corps' dedication to maintaining safety on Nigerian roads and encouraged the public to keep providing reliable information to support enforcement initiatives.
