Goods destroyed as fire guts 10-storey Lagos market building

The well-known Mandilas building on Broad Street, Lagos Island Local Government Area, Lagos State, was completely destroyed by fire on Sunday, destroying clothing items valued at millions of naira.

In a statement, Margaret Adeseye, the director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, stated that the cause of the fire was still unknown.
Before emergency personnel arrived, the fire was reported to have originated on the building's first floor and spread to the fourth.

As they arrived at the scene of the fire, members of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were able to stop the fire from spreading further.

"A warehouse in a ten-story building is on fire," declared Adeyese. The fourth floor has been affected by the fire, which started on the first floor.

"Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu Fire Stations are still fighting fires on the scene. There were no casualties reported, and the cause is still unknown.
In response to the incident, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwoolu called for calm among the people of the state and revealed that an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the fire.

"I would like to share an update on the warehouse fire at the Mandilas Building, Broad Street, Lagos Island, as reported by our teams on the ground. Starting on the first floor, the fire spread to the fourth. Our courageous teams from the Sari Iganmu and Ebute Elefun Fire Stations are currently fighting fires.

"Investigations are in progress, but the cause is still unknown. Thankfully, there have been no reports of casualties. While our first responders are working diligently to stabilize the situation, I would like to ask everyone to maintain their composure.
The National Council of Arts and Culture reportedly lost at least four cows, three goats, and an office building on December 30 when a late-night fire destroyed the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos State.
