Group decries frequent deaths on Ogun road, demands intervention
The Ogun administration has come under fire from the Campaign for Democratic and Workers' Rights for neglecting to install speed breakers on the recently restored Ikangba/Agoro road in the state's Ijebu Ode region.
According to the group, the lack of these speed breakers is to blame for the numerous collisions and fatalities that occur on the road on a nearly daily basis.
The group claimed that between February and June, when the road's rehabilitation was finished, at least eight people had died, including two female students from Seico Secondary School who were taking the current West African Senior School Certificate Examination, in a statement released on Saturday by CDWR Coordinator Eko Nicholas.
The group said that the government had erred in rejecting multiple previous requests to install speed breakers on the recently restored road, which would have lessened the problem of drivers speeding on this route.
"The Campaign for Democratic and Workers' Rights (CDWR) Ogun State chapter, for the umpteenth time, calls on Prince Dapo Abiodun's government to immediately construct speed breakers, provide lighting, and post traffic signs in order to prevent the ongoing, unnecessary, and preventable deaths of residents of Obalende-Olorunsogo, Ikangba-Agoro, and other road users on the newly rehabilitated road."
"This is to restrict and control vehicle speed and warn drivers against careless driving."
Since the restoration work was finished in February of this year, the Ikangba/Agoro road has turned into a death trap.
“Eight people have lost their lives thus far, on the road, as at the last count.
“Many have also sustained serious and life-threatening injuries.
“The most recent deaths include Mr Demion Chukwu, a 70-year-old man, who till his unfortunate death resided in Ikangba Housing estate. He died on the 2nd of June,2025, due to a fatal accident involving him on a motorcycle and another motorcycle (Okada) that occurred on Sunday, June 1st,2025.
“The other victim, a boy, resident in Sagamu, whose identity couldn’t be ascertained, had serious injuries and was admitted to one of the hospitals in Ijebu Ode. However, unconfirmed sources reported that he died on June 4, 2025.
“Recall also, that on the 23rd of May 2025, Mosaku Aisha and Omobewaji Sanni, two female students of Seico Senior Secondary School, Ikangba Town, who were writing the ongoing WASSCE were crushed to death by a truck on this same road”
In order to stop the unsightly incidents, the organization encouraged State Governor Dapo Abiodun to take action and install speed breakers, lamps, and traffic signs on the route.
