I was duped supporting Obaseki’s second term – Shaibu
During his support of Godwin Obasek's bid for a second term, Philip Shaibu, the deputy governor of Edo State, said on Tuesday that he had been duped.
He said that he had been duped, even though he had risked his long-term relationship with Obaseki's predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, to oppose apparent godfatherism and support his principal's ambition.
Former student union leader Shaibu bemoaned the fact that the governor is camping out with another candidate for governorship, even though he stood with Obaseki against someone (Oshiomhole) he thought of as a father.
A few leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo North, Shuaibu's senatorial district, endorsed Asue Ighodalo, a former chairman of Sterling Bank, as their choice for PDP governor on Sunday.
Several influential members of the party attended the meeting, which was called by Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, a former deputy governor of the state.
Furthermore, there are rumours that Obaseki, who opposes Shaibu's bid for governor, is supporting Ighodalo.
Speaking on Arise TV's Morning Show, however, the deputy governor asserted that he later realised he had been duped even though he had given the governor all of his support in the fight against oppression.
He declared, "I staked my relationship because I detest oppression." In order to support Godwin Obaseki in Edo North, I lost about 20% of my political capital in that relationship. In addition, I supported the governor's bid for a second term using all of my assets—including my vehicles and the money we used to secure the PDP ticket—through friends and others, even though I was not financially connected to him. Eventually, I realised that I had been duped.
Therefore, it would be an understatement to say that I have betrayed. I gave up my entitlements and personal income to keep the system operating, and I feel deeply wounded and betrayed as a result.
He played down Obaseki's favourite candidate, saying the people needed someone with experience and that the state had experimented with Obaseki enough.
Edo State doesn't have time to experiment because we tried it with Governor Godwin Obaseki, and some of us have to go above and beyond to fill in the gaps, according to Shaibu. People say that although Shaibu is a well-liked deputy governor, I only have two portfolios and must cover the gaps.
The PDP will zone the ticket to his senatorial district if equity and justice are upheld, he added, refuting claims that his residence in Edo North will automatically disqualify him from consideration for the party's ticket.
Therefore, living in Oshiomhole's neighbourhood is not the true problem. What I am bringing to the table is the real problem. If we want to discuss zoning and agenda, the truth is that Edo North has never received a ticket from the PDP to run for governor.
Therefore, when it comes to the equity and fairness that the governor is promoting, it appears that PDP is favouring Philip Shaibu's candidature. I can assure you that the people of Edo State will not tolerate the governor bringing in an outsider, and we will not accept it.
