Immigration investigates torn passport, invites couple

A couple who arrived at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, only to openly destroy the passport because of a quarrel, has been invited by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

In a widely shared video, a woman was seen destroying her husband's passport upon landing at the airport, and authorities asked the spouse to have the maturity and bravery to pick up the pieces off the ground.

The Immigration Act of 2015, as amended, section 10(b), according to the NIS, was violated, and it claimed it has opened enquiries into the situation.

The person who tore the passport has been identified and invited for additional inquiry, according to a statement released by the Service and signed by Kenneth Udo, its Public Relations Officer.
"The Immigration Service of Nigeria (NIS) has launched a formal investigation following the circulation of a video on social media, showing a female traveler destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The person has been located and encouraged to participate in additional research. Her acts would have violated Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as modified), with consequences indicated under Section 10(h) of the same Act, if the charges are confirmed, according to the NIS.

"The Nigeria Immigration Service maintains its unwavering dedication to safeguarding the provisions of the Immigration Act for the purpose of national security, as well as to maintaining the honour and integrity of the country's legal frameworks," the agency declared.
