Lagos finally reopens Ladipo Market
The Lagos State Government has reopened Ladipo Market, Mushin, after its management met the most essential criteria set for reopening markets sealed across the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, said this in a statement on Monday.
He explained that business activities would commence at the popular spare parts market, after its recent closure for various environmental infractions.
Wahab noted that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu prioritised the issue of a clean environment, public health, and safety in line with the THEMES Plus agenda.
This, according to him, informed the recent drive to enforce strict compliance with waste management and best sanitation practices in markets across the state.
The Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to environmental sustainability and public safety, particularly within markets and around business facilities.
He said the goal was to ensure all markets in the state adhere to laid down environmental rules, resulting in a safer and healthier business environment for buyers and sellers.
He urged the traders to support the efforts of the state government and adhere strictly to environmental laws, warning that any market that runs foul risked indefinite closure.
LAWMA on September 29, ordered the immediate closure of Ladipo Market in Mushin, over several environmental infractions that include indiscriminate waste disposal, unhygienic premises, and non-payment of waste bills, among others.

The LAWMA CEO, Gbadegesin, who made the clarification, the market remained closed because it was observed that its management had not fully met the stipulated mandatory safety and environmental measures earlier outlined by the Authority.
“Our primary concern is the safety of the people and environmental well-being at marketplaces. Reopening is contingent upon strict adherence to the safety conditions set forth by LAWMA. It is imperative that all necessary precautions are taken to prevent any potential risks,” he said.
Gbadegesin added that while several markets had successfully met the outlined safety requirements and had been permitted to resume business, Ladipo Market would also be reopened to business activities, once it passed the requisite safety audit.
