Nigerian athletes paid training grants, allowances – Sports minister
It has been revealed by Senator John Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, that Nigerian athletes, both domestic and international, have been given training funding and allowances.
The minister stated that this demonstrated the ministry's care for the athletes in the nation.
On Tuesday, Enoh, using the handle #OwanEnoh on Twitter, announced that home-based athletes representing the nation will be receiving training funding for the "first time ever."
In order to make sure that all Team Nigeria athletes receive their local, international, and Olympic allowances, he tweeted, "I had another interactive session with the athletes at the games village in Paris as a follow up on their welfare."Athletes who compete from home claimed that they have never been granted training money, as this has only been available to their foreign-based counterparts representing the country.
For the first time ever, we have made sure that training allowances are given to domestic athletes who represent the nation. Athletes from abroad and those living at home are now eligible for training funds on top of all previously given benefits.
All national athletes "deserve training grants, as they all put in efforts and passion to represent the country," the minister said. Every one of them is worthy.
"The athletes are really excited for podium appearances, and there's a lot of excitement at the games village."
Athlete Favour Ofili of Nigeria qualified for the women's 200-meter Olympic final on Monday night at the Stade de France in Paris, France.
She finished second to new women's 100-meter champion Julien Alfred of France in a season-best time of 22.05 seconds.
She places third in the crowd and will compete against seven other people on Tuesday night.
