Osun mortuary attendants, five others arrested for selling human parts
On Wednesday, the Osun State Police Command declared that it had detained seven individuals who were involved in the sale of human parts and water needed for body washing throughout the state.
The Osun Command Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, signed a statement stating that two mortuary attendants, Johnson Daniel, 43, and Adetunji Okunade, 42, were among those arrested.
The arrests were carried out, according to Giwa-Alade, who also named the other suspects as Olaniyan Azeez, Balogun Temitope, Oladapo Hammed, Kazeem Rasaq, and Asaka Rauf. The concerned party had reportedly received credible information that Daniel, an Ipetu-Ijesa mortuary attendant, was selling the remains of corpses deposited at the mortuary to local doctors.
"The suspects used these corpses, which they had taken from Johnson Daniel, the mortuary attendant, for a number of ceremonial uses. Additionally, Daniel admitted to plotting with Adetunji Okunade, another mortuary worker, to sell interested native doctors the leftover water used to bathe corpses.
"Fragments of substances suspected to be human skulls were recovered at the homes of Asaka Rauf and Oladapo Hammed during the investigation, while a female pant and a notebook containing instructions on ritual practices were recovered from the residence of Balogun Temitope Asimiyu," Giwa-Alade said. "A search was conducted at the residences of these suspects."
Three persons were detained for advocating for the Yoruba Nation in the state, according to a spokesman for the Osun Police Command.
As per his statement, Oluwafemi Fagbuyi, who was picked up at Obada Market in Ikire, where he was addressing people, urged his audience “to denounce their allegiance to Nigeria as a nation.” He claimed that Nigeria ended in 2014 after 100 years of amalgamation and displayed the Yoruba Nation’s flag in the process.
Following a preliminary inquiry, the case was turned over to the State Criminal inquiry Department. Joy Faseyiku, 63, and Alabede Janet, 64, were taken into custody in Osogbo and Ikire, respectively, in relation to the crime after a thorough investigation.
He went on, "The investigation is over, and the suspects have been charged before the Federal High Court as a result."
