Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has commended the Super Eagles for their tenacity and sportsmanship during the FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

In a post on X.com on Wednesday, Obi, who attended the match in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, expressed his admiration for the players' commitment and fighting spirit.

He stated, “Yesterday, I traveled to Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, where I joined numerous other sports enthusiasts to support the Super Eagles as they faced the Warriors of Zimbabwe in their sixth match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“As always, our team showcased the quintessential Nigerian qualities of strength, resilience, and dedication on the pitch. Football, and sports in general, continue to serve as a vital unifying force for our nation amidst ongoing challenges of disunity.”

He further noted that although the Super Eagles did not achieve victory, their determination and sportsmanship resonated with the Nigerian people.

“While we may not have secured a win on the field, our beloved players have once again captured our hearts through their evident display of sportsmanship.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our national football team and to everyone whose efforts and sacrifices have brought us this far in our journey. Our efforts have not been in vain,” he wrote.

Nigeria's aspirations for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico faced another hurdle on Tuesday with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

After a challenging first half, Victor Osimhen put Nigeria ahead in the 74th minute, but the team was unable to maintain their lead, conceding an equalizer in stoppage time.

Nigerian football fans shared mixed reactions following the Super Eagles' unsatisfactory home draw, with many highlighting issues such as lack of coordination, poor finishing, and an overreliance on individual talent.
