Shield masses from subsidy removal bite, rights group begs Tinubu
A human rights organisation under the aegis of the Community of Advocacy for Positive Behavioural Patterns Initiative called on President Bola Tinubu on Saturday to protect and cushion the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy, especially on low-income earners and youths in Nigeria.
The organisation said it became necessary to enable Nigerians to secure their right to an adequate standard of living and avoid further hardship.
The director of its campaign team, Bamidele Mann, raised the issue in an open letter to Tinubu obtained by journalists in Abuja.
“Your pronouncement during the inaugural speech on Monday, May 29, 2023 that ‘fuel subsidies is gone’, citing budgetary concerns, has changed the trajectory of our dear country.
“Hitherto, fuel subsidy has been a contentious issue over the years, with some calling for its removal and others advocating for its continuation.
“However, we are resolute and have faith, that your decision to remove fuel subsidy should subsequently impact the nation positively.
“We strongly believe you must have done an indebt research on the economy before taking the bull by the horn, while we remain optimistic of reaping the benefits in the near future.
Our humble request
“Your Excellency, we want you to protect and cushion the effect of the removal, especially on the low incomes and youths, to enable us secure right to adequate standard of living and to avoid further hardship.
“Consequently, many are terrified they might not meet their daily need, which could be absolutely excruciating.
“As the father of the nation, we seek your support in this regard, as we are prepared to work with you to create a system that works. We are optimistic the right attitude will take us through the journey.”
