Three arrested over unruly behaviour on Air Peace London-Lagos flight
At Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport, three travelers—Adedigba Adewale, Ashibogu Magnus, and Iwonze Benjamin—were taken into custody on Wednesday for reportedly acting unrulily on an Air Peace trip from London to Lagos.
According to reports, the altercation started when two travellers tried to board in business class even though they had economy tickets.
The passengers pushed their way into the section without permission, despite crew members' best efforts to settle the dispute amicably.
A witness said that as the passengers threatened to start a riot, tensions among other travellers increased.
The disruption was exacerbated when they were observed openly consuming alcohol that they had illegally brought onto the aircraft.
Dr. Ejike Ndiulo, a spokesperson for Air Peace, revealed on Thursday that the flight captain briefly left the cockpit to assess the situation before returning as a precaution.
The flight crew alerted Nigerian security agencies ahead of landing, ensuring law enforcement officials were ready to apprehend the disruptive passengers upon arrival.
“Recognising the potential threat, the flight crew notified security agencies in Nigeria ahead of arrival. Upon landing, law enforcement officials were on the ground to apprehend the individuals who were taken into custody for further investigations.
To the glory of God, our crew members just got into a verbal argument and none of them were hurt in any way. It is crucial to remember that at Air Peace, we are unmatched in our dedication to passenger safety and observance of international aviation regulations," he said.
Assuring the public that the airline is constantly working to maintain the highest standards of security and order on all flights, the airline PR also stressed that "any form of disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated."
However, the spokeswoman expressed gratitude to the crew for their professional handling of the situation.
Igbafe Afegbai, the Director of Aviation Security, was unable to answer his phone or reply to his inquiry texts, so attempts to discuss the issue with him were in vain.
