Urologists lament rising penis fracture among youths, blame sex-enhancing drugs’ abuse
Urologists are becoming concerned about sex-enhancing drug usage among young people in Nigeria.
The doctors ascribed the downward trend to a number of causes, such as peer pressure, false information, and the desire for sexual prowess.
The specialists bemoaned the fact that a rise in penile fractures has been connected to the widespread use of sex enhancers.
According to the male reproductive experts, many men are using sex enhancers to improve their sexual performance, and their use has increased dramatically in recent years.
According to the doctors, the number of fractured penis cases has increased recently, especially among young men who take sex enhancers.
Noting that many males feel pressured to perform sexually in order to match societal expectations, they ascribed the trend to social pressure.
A consultant urologist named Dr. Gabriel Ogah bemoaned the fact that many young men have resorted to risky, self-administered drug dosages to extend erections and improve their sexual performance in an effort to live up to the unreasonable expectations established by pornography and social pressures.
Ogah pointed out that young men are turning to drugs and other illegal means to meet these unattainable expectations due to the growing obsession with penis size and prolonged sexual performance, which is particularly affected by pornography.
He disclosed that tramadol, a drug that doctors usually prescribe to treat disorders like premature ejaculation or to relieve pain, was one of the most often misused drugs.
As the recommended dose for tramadol ranges between 50 and 100 milligrams, Ogah pointed out that many young men in Nigeria have been taking up to 1,000 milligrams, which is ten times the prescribed amount, in a bid to sustain erections for prolonged periods.
The urologist claimed he has seen a worrying increase in young men seeking medical care for penile fractures as a result of these unlicensed activities.
"I have treated more cases of fractured penises in the last four years than I did in the previous thirty years combined," Ogah stated.
Although there is no official record of the increase in these injuries, the doctor stated that it has been a regular occurrence in his practice.
When the penis experiences physical damage or stress and an erection becomes too rigid, penile fractures can result. The longer, abnormally sustained erections that occur when men take excessive amounts of sex-enhancing drugs can make the penis as rigid as a "cassava stick," which means that even light pressure can cause it to break.
According to him, "a man's erection that lasts for several hours without going away can cause serious damage to the penile tissue, which can lead to fractures and in some cases, permanent impotence."
According to the urologist, abusing sex-enhancing medications has long-term effects beyond only physical harm.
He emphasised that even in cases where medical treatment is helpful in reducing the duration of an erection, the harm that might result from overstressing the penis can make a guy impotent permanently.
He cautioned that such results might be disastrous for men in their prime, many of whom are ignorant of the dangers of uncontrolled drug use and self-medication.
Ogah demanded more public education and understanding on the risks of drug use without supervision as well as the irrational expectations that are stoked by pornography.
He stressed how crucial it is to have the right medical advice while handling sexual health concerns.
Additionally, he cautioned that the quest of heightened sexual performance may result in permanent harm.
Additionally, Dr. Emmanuel Eze, a consultant urologist, pointed out that a significant factor in the rise in the usage of sex enhancers was false information regarding sex and sexual health.
He added that one of the main causes of the trend was the pursuit of sexual prowess.
"It is unrealistic for many men to aspire to be able to perform like porn stars. Sex is about intimacy, connection, and pleasure, not just about performance.
Contrary to popular belief, sex enhancers cannot solve all of a man's sexual issues. According to him, a lot of these drugs have harmful side effects and can even cause addiction.
The use of sex enhancers is not a replacement for leading a healthy lifestyle, the urologist underlined.
"Maintaining good sexual health requires a healthy diet, consistent exercise, and sound sleep habits," he stated.
He pointed out that a lot of guys use sex enhancers without first seeing a doctor, which might have major negative effects on their health.
He stated that there have been instances of males using sex enhancers without first seeing a doctor, which has resulted in major health issues like heart attacks, strokes, and even death.
The urologist added that one of the main causes of the development is the broad accessibility of sex enhancers.
He pointed out that using sex enhancers is not a quick solution for issues related to sexual health.
Because sexual health issues are intricate and multidimensional, a comprehensive approach is necessary.
He stated that males who use sex enhancers may develop an addiction to them, which may result in mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
