Why I’m facing death threats – NAFDAC DG, Prof. Adeyeye
The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has disclosed that she is receiving death threats as a result of her agency's efforts to dismantle significant counterfeit drug distribution networks in Kano, Idumota, Yaba, and Onitsha.
In spite of these threats, Adeyeye remains steadfast in her objective to eliminate counterfeit drugs from Nigerian markets, asserting that she will not yield to intimidation.
During a statement in Abuja, she highlighted her commitment to public service, reflecting on her decision to leave a comfortable life in the United States—where she resided for 37 years—to return to Nigeria for this important mission.
“I returned home to serve. I could have remained in the US, living comfortably. However, I view my role here as a mission,” she stated.
She emphasized that while she takes necessary precautions, the threats will not dissuade her or her team from their dedication to public health.
Adeyeye also shared the perils encountered by NAFDAC officials, recalling an incident in which an officer was violently assaulted during an inspection operation in Onitsha.
“One of my staff members was attacked and left injured in Onitsha six months ago. I once noticed a wound on another team member’s arm and inquired about it. She informed me that she nearly lost her life during an inspection,” she recounted.
Despite the dangers, Adeyeye reaffirmed her determination to ensure that Nigerians have access to safe and high-quality medications, asserting that fear has no role in her work.
