Dele Momodu urges Tinubu to preserve democracy in Nigeria.

Dele Momodu, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party, has criticized President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, labeling it as "anti-democratic."

Tinubu's actions, which involve the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and the Rivers State House of Assembly for a period of six months, have drawn significant backlash.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, Momodu expressed that this decision contradicts the democratic values that Tinubu has previously advocated.

Momodu remarked, “This is truly unfortunate. I have known President Tinubu very well. Although we have not been in the same political party, we shared experiences during our time in exile, where he fought valiantly for democracy. Many of us who were comrades during that period feel embarrassed that we now have a leader who once championed democracy, yet we are witnessing actions that are more reminiscent of dictatorship.”

He continued, “I have repeatedly stated in various open letters that while one may falter in economic matters, the public is often forgiving, recognizing that not everyone is an expert in economics. However, failing in the realm of democracy is unacceptable.

“It is essential to strengthen our democracy, as President Goodluck Jonathan successfully did, and as Obasanjo managed to do, despite facing allegations of attempting a third term, he still peacefully transferred power to President Yar’Adua.”

Momodu urged Tinubu to rethink his strategy.

“I implore President Bola Tinubu, ‘Please do not undermine democracy in Nigeria.’ Everyone who cares for him will convey this message. I have not sought anything from him, but we appreciate his past contributions, which now seem to be at risk,” Momodu stated.

Additionally, he accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of intimidating opposition parties and cautioned Tinubu against being misled by his advisors.

“I am publicly stating to millions of Nigerians that there are individuals misleading President Tinubu, and he must not allow himself to be deceived,” he concluded.

He ought to focus on fulfilling his responsibilities. The sole factor that can ensure a second term is performing his duties effectively. There is no need to instill fear in anyone.
