Finidi George lands new job at Rivers United

Barely three weeks after leaving his position as head coach of Nigeria's senior national team, former Super Eagles coach Finidi George has accepted a new managerial position at Rivers United in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

On Wednesday, Finidi was named head coach of the 2022 NPFL winners; on Thursday, he will be unveiled.

The Rivers United Football Club released a statement on Wednesday announcing Finidi George's hiring as their new technical manager.

Finidi, who had a stellar playing career lasting more than fifteen years, brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to our team.

His remarkable accomplishments include winning the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles, the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and the Nigeria Premier Football League with Enyimba International FC in 2023.
“As a coach, Finidi has demonstrated his ability to lead teams to success, and we are confident that he will bring his expertise and passion to our club. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to a successful tenure under his leadership.”
After just two games in charge, Finidi resigned as the Super Eagles' head coach in June. The Nigeria Football Federation was compelled to hire a foreign technical adviser for the squad after the side's dismal performance in two 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

Finidi played for Enyimba for two full seasons and nearly finished a third before joining the Super Eagles, helping them win their record-tying ninth NPFL championship in 2023.

He succeeds Evans Ogenyi as head coach of Rivers United, who led the team until the conclusion of the previous campaign following the expulsion of Stanley Eguma, a longtime player.

The 53-year-old Port Harcourt native started his career with Calabar Rovers and Iwanyanwu Nationale. He also played for the local team Sharks FC, which merged with Dolphins to form Rivers United in 2016, for two seasons before starting a remarkable career in Europe.
