Nwokocha, a former Senate Minority Whip, is the caretaker secretary of the Labour Party.

Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the 10th Assembly's Senate Minority Whip, has been elected Secretary of the Labour Party's (LP) 29-member National Caretaker Committee.

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, confirmed Nwokocha's selection at the party's extended stakeholders meeting on Wednesday in Umuahia, the state capital, at the Banquet Hall of the Abia State Government House.

The 29-member LP National Caretaker Committee is led by former Finance Minister Senator Nenadi Esther Usman.
Nwokocha, a senator from the Abia Central Senatorial District, was chosen in the general elections of 2023 to serve on the Labour Party platform.

Following the National Assembly Election Petitions Appeal Court's ruling, Nwokocha resigned from the Senate after six months as Minority Whip/Principal Officer of the 10th Senate and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC.

The newly appointed LP Caretaker Secretary served as the representative for the Isiala Ngwa North/Isiala Ngwa South Federal Constituency in Abia State in the House of Representatives from 2015 till 2023.

Both the House Committee on Insurance and Actuarial Matters and the House Committee on the Federal Character Commission (FCC) had him as their deputy chairman.
In addition, Nwokocha held the positions of Chairman of the Adhoc Committee on The Failure of the National Health Insurance System (NHIS), Chairman of the Adhoc Committee on Pipelines Explosion/Fire Outbreak in Rivers State, and Chairman of the Adhoc Committee on Niger-Delta Power Holding Limited.

From 2007 until 2015, Nwokocha served as the representative for the Isiala Ngwa South Constituency in the Abia House of Assembly prior to his election to the House of Representatives.
